In February 1992, a couple who had moved from California to our area was looking for a support group for couples as well as a way to meet people, as they knew very few. They were not interested in the bar scene, so they took matters in their own hands. The California couple had participated in a similar group in CA, so they placed an ad in a local Gay/Lesbian newspaper inviting couples to form the group. Three couples responded. One couple was very interested, the other two were "curious." The next meeting, only one couple (the interested one) showed up. The four decided to continue advertising in the G/L press.
A few months later, over 10 couples were meeting the third Saturday of each month. The gatherings were called Snak 'N' Yaks, with a discussion followed by snacks, or a potluck meal. Some of the members offered to present some of their areas of expertise to the group (for example, we had a lawyer, who talked about insurance, wills, etc.; a travel agent talked about exclusive Gay/Lesbian vacations; a massage therapist showed some easy one-to-one massage techniques) Most of the meetings had a topic selected by the hosts. Sometimes they were light topics, like: leisure activities; some others were heavier, like dealing with family. Sometimes there were no topics at all, just conversation or a Hallowe'en party, picnic, etc. Money was collected each time ($2/couple) for beverages, cups, and printing and postage for the newsletter..
After three years we decided to organize better. By-laws were developed, which included the $24.00 membership fee (instead of $2/meeting), requirements of hosting or co-hosting at least once a year. Officers were voted for: Presidential Couple VP-Couple, Secretary Couple and Treasurer Couple. The group has flourished since then. |
